Anyone else get the feeling...

that this was actually an early version of one of the first Collins family Christmas photos?

It's so gonna be my Christmas card some year...

Dark Shadows classic series icons: 1897

Just as it says on the tin: a set of 20 Dark Shadows classic series icons centered around the show's 1897 story arc.

I freely admit that #3 is based on a very different icon by ghettospellwork which featured Carl Collins.  Beth seemed even less likely than Carl to sing "Telephone", so it worked for me.

Writer's Block: Don't fear the reaper

Have you ever had a near-death experience? How close have you come to dying?

I'm not sure how close I came to death, although I was fairly certain I was going to die...I was at a party in high school, and I did what I was always doing in those days, getting mixed up in trying to stop a fight...there was a gun involved, and thankfully it wasn't used, but I did get hauled out onto a balcony and tossed from a second or third story railing.  I was left there in some shrubs for hours, wondering if anyone was going to get some help, and they never did...I was in incredible pain, but at the end of the night I managed to drag myself home.

In Dreams...

Have you ever had one of those odd, freakishly detailed, slightly scary dreams that makes you think you're going even more insane than you already were?  Yeah well...

I had this dream last night.  It was like an old Barbie commercial from the 1950s or 60s, but it wasn't for Barbie, Ken, Midge, or any of the other usual suspects.  It was for Barbie's non-existent (to my knowledge) but very glamorous stepmother, Frances.  Apparently, Barbie's father. the president, was a widower who got remarried to a woman only slightly older than his eldest child...anyway...this Frances had red hair and was dressed in a lovely, sparkly blue evening gown; she also had a nice, yellow sundress included, as well as sunglasses, two handbags, and THREE pairs of shoes.  Oh, and the commercial also felt it necessary to mention that you should be very careful with Frances, as she's recently suffered severe head trauma and a single knock on the skull could kill her.

idek.  srsly.

In (Semi) Defense of Lindsay Lohan

So many people seem so utterly overjoyed now that Lindsay is in jail.  I've read comments ranging from "You reap what you sow" to "Bitch is getting what she deserves I hope they put her in gen pop and the convicts cream her little entitled ass".

How many of us know what it's like to be a kid who happened to be sorta cute and have a bit of acting talent, and so showbiz was a viable option, but it turns out your parents had no self control, so you didn't learn any either...

How many of us know what it's like to be a kid who has most everything just handed to you thanks to your cuteness/hotness/skill/whatever, so you just figure that your whole life is gonna be a picnic.

Lindsay only recently turned 24 years old.  She's my age now.  Most people in This Modern Age are sort of screw-ups in their late teens and early twenties.  Some people grow up by the age of 30 and realize that life can't be a nonstop party.  Some people don't.  But if Lindsay were some random college student at Podunk University, would the world be delighting in the misfortunes which she has brought upon herself?

Anyone who has acted in any capacity, amateur or professional, can tell you that, sometimes, it can fuck you up.  For a child, acting is probably the most dangerous game.  You're young and everyone tells you how cute/pretty/talented you are, how good you're doing, how famous you're gonna be...and maybe you have an overbearing stage parent or two, the type of person who should never be guardian to a child because they're determined to live their own dreams through their child/children.  The same goes for some pageant and sports parents.

So, Lindsay does bad, bad things for any number of reasons, she gets messed up with drugs and alcohol, and she gets sent to jail for some period of time for her bad, bad deeds, and the public (the majority, anyway) dances and laughs with glee because "Well, she's an adult now.  She should have known there'd be consequences."

How do you learn that there are consequences when no one tries to teach you?  How do you learn proper behavior when the main people who should be modeling it, your parents and/or guardians, aren't?

I'm not saying that none of the blame for all of this should be placed on Lindsay.  She did more than her fair share to cause her troubles.  But please, let's at least admit she probably never stood a chance.  We've all seen and heard of her mother's drunken clubbing antics.  Hmmm, wonder where Lindsay picked that behavior up...OHHH!  And then there's her father, throwing himself at the press, one minute wanting to become the court-ordered custodian to his daughter, the next rabidly crying out that all she needs is rehab/jail/whatever is the opposite of what seems imminent.

I understand that the public is very entertained by this game of "Let's throw the actress/celebutante/villain-of-the-week-in-our-eyes in jail and see how long it takes before someone shanks them!" but frankly, I'm sick of it.  People screw up.  Celebrities are people.  They need punishment when they do something illegal, but they don't need everyone waiting, praying that something really fucked-up happens to them while their being punished.
Title: "Blood and Destiny"

Author: Nvr_Sk_to_Tll

Fandom: Dark Shadows

Pairings: brief Quentin/Jenny, Quentin/Beth

Rating/Warnings: hard PG-13/R for some violence.

A/N: This piece had been mostly finished for a long time, but now it is done and ready to be seen by the public.  It is, I may say, posted in honor of Alondra, who reminded me that this particular tale even existed.
This takes place in another of my many parallel time bands.

Summary: Another time in a world very different from our own.  It is the year 1895, but not as it occurred in the world we know best.  Disease sweeps through Collinwood, masking a horror beyond imagining as it goes.

Life at Collinwood moved along much as it had for years.Collapse )
Title: At Home in the World

Author: Nvr_Sk_to_Tll

Pairing: Quentin/Beth

Rating/Warning: PG-13 for some frighteningly mild suggestiveness between adults

A/N: I have about 500 different parallel time bands going in my mind, and in a few of them, the second Quentin Collins was a much more honorable man in his own time.  This is one of those bands.  It's not a gap in the parallel time(s) we saw on the show; my idea of the 1897 that would fit between 1841PT and 1970PT as portrayed on the show is rather different.

Summary: Another time in a world very different from our own.  It is the year 1897, but not as we know it.  Sometimes family is not just what we're born to, but what we build for ourselves.

"...and they say that he still roams the world. He is searching, hoping, for some way to end the dreadful curse that holds him captive; the curse which forces him to fear not only the moon, but the beast that dwells within himself."Collapse )
